Why the Barton Reading & Spelling System?
The Barton Reading & Spelling System is one of the nation's most respected Orton-Gillingham-based programs for students with dyslexia. Built on the Science of Reading, it uses a structured, sequential, and multisensory approach that teaches students to see, hear, say, and manipulate sounds simultaneously, helping build lasting reading and spelling skills. The program consists of 10 carefully sequenced levels and is taught one-on-one so instruction can be tailored to each student's pace. Research and school-based studies have shown meaningful improvements in phonological awareness, reading fluency, spelling, and overall literacy when students receive consistent intervention. Barton recommends a minimum commitment of two hours of one-on-one instruction each week, as regular, intensive practice is the key to helping students become confident, independent readers.
